In Italy, the bar holds a completely different position in everyday life than it does for us in the north. The bar is a morning meeting point before heading to work. It is where breakfast takes place — usually a cappuccino and a brioche. It is the place where news is exchanged, where people drop in briefly for a coffee at any time of day, and where, with a succinct “a posto!?” one checks on the well-being of those present while simultaneously reaffirming one’s social bonds.
Over the many years of our work in southern Piedmont, we have had the pleasure of being guests in a considerable number of such establishments. On the one hand, certainly to satisfy our affinity for local fermented beverages; on the other hand, out of the necessity to establish contacts within the local crafts community. Whatever our intention may have been, we always enjoyed ourselves and encountered warm-hearted, helpful, and capable people.
We can therefore only recommend to you, our guests, that you treat yourself to the pleasure of stopping by a bar for an aperitivo (from 5:00 p.m. onwards) and allow the local atmosphere to make its impression on you.
Below you will find some of our preferred addresses, including the corresponding Google Maps links, so that you can find your way there — and back again.
Even if they may sometimes appear somewhat uninviting at first glance, local bars are an important place for “stranieri” (those who wear white socks with sandals, or who do not speak Piedmontese) to establish local contacts and to become acquainted with the local stile di vita.
